Grasse’s history is also closely intertwined with that of the leather industry. In the twelfth century, the leather trade and tanning developed around the small canal that runs through the city. However, this process produced a strong, unpleasant odor. To mask this, perfume manufacturers began producing scented gloves, handbags, and belts, aligning with the new fashion from Italy introduced by Queen Catherine de Medici.

In 1614, the king recognized the new corporation of “glovers perfumers”. Since then, the perfume industry has undergone significant development.
